It is uncommon to find an artist that has a broad range of styles and abilities but the work of Chuck is exactly that: he is a diverse and talented artist. Born in Reading Chuck has been living in Cardiff for just over a year having completed a course at Gwent College in Newport. It can be seen from the works illustrated here that Chuck's training and influences help him to rise to whatever the occasion requires. His main influences come from comic and science fiction art, his most esteemed influence being the futuristic: comics Marvel and 2000AD. Though his natural artwork is along these lines he also admires the works of Geiger, Moebius and Tim Burton. The highly regarded course at Newport is designed to broaden the skills and scope of students by using a combination of fine art, computer graphics and photography. Chuck's combined work has produced a magnitude of creations which reflect this training. He has decorated the ceilings of two dentists, these images are in themselves very different. The main aim was to create a busy, detailed colarge that would keep the patient as distracted as possible. The link between the two images is there appeal to both adults and children alike. Here, Chuck has used various nature photography to build an underwater world of whales, fish, plant life and tranquil colours which would keep any patient occupied. In the second sample, the emphasis was more on fun than tranquillity. Hear Chuck has created a colourful, cartoon jungle of strange, friendly characters, some hidden, some covert, which positively beg us to stay busy for any length of dental treatment ! Although these works are hidden in a practice somewhere in Wales, the opposites of their technique and their content only emphasise Chuck's vicissitude. Chuck has also done commissioned work in various nightclubs in Cardiff. His largest creation having been at the Hippo Club in the city centre. Here, Chuck was able to to draw on his favoured artists: those of the action comic stories he loves. Huge, luminous heroes adorned the walls of the club, colourful combat screaming out from the black backdrop. But for me, the finest creation is the large disc jockey console which was converted into a space ship which, if looked at carefully, is in the shape of a hippopotamus head. As well as the club's decor, Chuck has also done several promotional posters for the club. My particular favourite in the King Kong hippo which has been skilfully made to look just like the original black and white film still. |

It is clear from these visuals that Chuck can draw for any occasion. His other works have included body line drawings, several dreams scape canvas work, realistic watercolours and still life sketches. Another strong influence is graffiti art which he has also done on a large scale. At the age of twenty-seven, Chuck has a unique extent of styles and works behind him. As time goes on I am sure that he will be turning his hand to many more manifestations. He is available for commissions and as we have seen he is very capable of whatever the occasion demands. |
